Our Jewellery - Silver or Gold?
All our jewellery is made either from Sterling Silver or Fine Silver. Sterling Silver, often called 925 Silver, is an alloy made using 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of other metals. As pure silver is very soft, the mixture of other metals in Sterling Silver allows us to make durable long-lasting jewellery without sacrificing the colour or shine that the silver provides.
In some occasions we will stock Fine Silver items. Fine silver contains 99.9% pure silver and will be slightly softer than its Sterling Silver counterparts.
Most of our Sterling Silver jewellery are plated with other precious metals to add visual appeal by changing the overall colour of the finish as well as providing extra durability and longevity to the piece. Plated jewellery are also tarnish resistant.
More about our plated ranges:
Rhodium Plating:
Wonder why most white gold jewellery have a ultra-bright colour and are always shiny? Because they are rhodium plated. The same has been done with a number of our Sterling Silver jewellery, we plated them with rhodium to create the bright white shine and prevent the silver from tarnishing.
Rhodium is a rare and noble metal that imparts an extremely bright and hard-wearing finish when applied as plating and gives a durable finish of exceptional brightness and are more scratch resistant. Rhodium finishes can greatly enhance the appearance and longevity of any jewellery to which they are applied. Rhodium is a precious metal that belongs to the platinum metal group.
Rose Gold Plating:
Our rose gold blend is warm yet vibrant. We call this blend, Aurum Rose. This special blend has a luxury, warm and romantic finish with a gorgeous pink glow that will spice up your everyday style.
Yellow Gold Plating:
Our yellow gold mix has a sunny warm golden tone with a beautiful luminous finish that will make you look glamorous! We call this Golden Shine. This special gold blend is perfect for anyone who is looking for something luxury with a warm sunshine glow.
Our jewellery are electrolplated.
Electroplating Process
The plating technique we use for our jewellery is called electroplating. This technique is commonly used on plated jewellery. Electroplating involves passing an electric current through a solution called an electrolyte. This is done by dipping two terminals called electrodes into the electrolyte and connecting them into a circuit with a battery or power supply. The electrodes and electrolyte are made from carefully chosen elements or compounds. When the electricity flows through the circuit they make, the electrolyte splits up and some of the metal atoms it contains are deposited in a thin layer on top of one of the electrodes. This is when an item becomes electroplated.
Taking Care of your Jewellery
Although our jewellery are protected by electroplating, it is still recommended that you take good care of them. If not subject to excessive friction and wear, your plated sterling silver jewellery will retain its original look for a long period of time.
All plating will eventually wear down as you wear your jewellery, exposing the Sterling Silver underneath. This means your piece of jewellery will tarnish over time just like non-plated Sterling Silver. If your silver jewellery is looking worn, simply clean it with a micro fibre cloth/jewellery cloth or wash with toothpaste/baking soda.
If you would like to replate your jewellery it can be done at your local jewellery services store.
